Whether you’re hiking to boost your cardiovascular health, improve your mental clarity, support joint mobility, build lower-body strength, or simply get in some joyful movement outside, Washington offers some of Connecticut’s most inspiring trails. Tucked in Litchfield County, this charming town blends New England beauty with some truly standout outdoor experiences, especially for those looking to connect hiking with wellness. I’m sharing my favorite local trails, scenic go-tos, and a few of the places I personally love to refuel with nutritious eats and trail-friendly snacks.
Why Hike Near Washington?
Washington is probably one of my favorites spots around the area, and has some great eats too with some nutritious and delicious treats! Here are some of my picks for the best places to stop in, whether you’re hiking or just looking for a healthy meal in an uplifting environment.
My Picks for Healthy Eating in Washington

GW Tavern
I frequent this spot alot. From there local grass-fed meatloaf to other old-time home cooked meals, these can be packed full of nutrition and also support local farming. The restaurant is like a time capsule back to the 1700s and has a very peaceful aesthetic as the stream is running right behind it. I personally love the grass-fed burger and sweet potato fries and the vegan cobb salad!
The Smithy Nine Main

There is a both a grocery store and a deli across the street. The Smithy gets a lot of local products and meats and cheeses. The deli portion across the street has some delicious gluten-free baked goods while having an array of nutritionally dense sandwiches. I usually get the turkey, avocado, microgreens on whole grain gluten-free bread. This is supplying me some magnesium for calming my muscle and extra antioxidants to help with better recovery. Plus, you can take it to go and hike up to Maricostas with a sandwich on hand or some items from the Smithy.

“This one has two separate entrances. For the more challenging (and longer) path, park off Christian Street by the Red Barn. The other path up can be accessed off a back road on Lake Waramaug. I have been up there to watch the fireworks over the lake on July 4th before and the views were amazing! This is a little bit more challenging of a hike with some elevation but is still very manageable. For great views, I highly recommend this one!”
