The Truth About Nutrition Misinformation in Medicine—and What to Do Instead

Clinicians Are Speaking Out About Nutrition Misinformation

A global survey of over 1,000 physicians recently revealed a startling trend: 90% of doctors are concerned about the rise in diet-related misinformation—especially that which spreads through social media platforms.

Even more revealing? The majority of these physicians admitted they received inadequate nutrition training in medical school.

This combination—poor foundational training and a tidal wave of internet fads—has created a perfect storm for patients. People are overwhelmed by contradicting advice, self-prescribing restrictive diets, and unintentionally harming their long-term health.

The Real Role of Therapeutic Diets in Medical Nutrition

Let’s be clear: therapeutic diets do have a place. When used correctly and guided by a trained clinician or specialist, they can help manage or reverse conditions like autoimmune disease, GI disorders, or hormonal imbalances.

But here’s the issue: many people are jumping into restrictive protocols without medical supervision, using Instagram reels or “gut detox” guides as their blueprint.

⚠️ If you’re experiencing suspect symptoms—digestive distress, fatigue, chronic inflammation—please work with a professional. Therapeutic protocols like low FODMAP, AIP, or elimination diets are not meant for long-term use and are not one-size-fits-all.

What Happens When You Chase Every Food Trend?

We get it—new diets promise better energy, fat loss, and clearer skin. But the cost of chasing trends can be steep.

Here’s what can happen:

  • You miss out on life. Avoiding social events because of food rules? That’s not health.
  • You may not be getting the nutrients you actually need. Cutting out whole food groups can lead to micronutrient deficiencies.
  • You can lose too much weight and develop fear-based behaviors around food.
  • Your emotional health suffers. Anxiety, obsession, and burnout around eating are all signs something’s off.

Orthorexia Is Real—and I’ve Lived It

One of the lesser-known dangers of obsessive “clean eating” is orthorexia, an unhealthy fixation on only eating foods perceived as “pure” or “healthy.”

And I’m not just speaking clinically—I’ve been there. I know how easy it is to follow every rule, thinking you’re doing everything “right,” while your world gets smaller and your health—mental and physical—starts to suffer.

Healing means letting go of rigid rules and embracing a holistic, flexible approach that includes both evidence-based nutrition and emotional wellbeing.

Build a Sustainable Nutrition Plan: 5 Steps to Start Today

Forget extreme rules. Here’s how to begin creating a plan that works with your body—not against it:

1. Eat With the Seasons

Seasonal eating is one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to increase nutrient density, support digestion, and reconnect with your body’s natural rhythms.

🌿 July is bursting with hydrating, nutrient-rich foods like:

  • 🥒 Cucumber
  • 🍉 Watermelon
  • 🫐 Blueberries
  • 🥬 Spinach
  • 🥑 Avocado
  • 🌿 Mint
  • 🍠 Beets
  • 🐟 Wild salmon

Try this summer salad:
Cucumber, beet, watermelon, spinach, blueberries, fresh mint, and a light vinaigrette. Add a bit of feta if dairy works for you!

2. Diversify Your Plant Foods

Aim for 30+ different plant-based foods per week. This supports gut health, immune resilience, and helps reduce systemic inflammation.

3. Choose Nutrient-Dense Alternatives—But Allow Treats

Build your meals around whole, nourishing ingredients and explore creative swaps you enjoy (like almond flour muffins or coconut yogurt).
But unless there’s a serious medical need or allergy, allow space for flexibility and treats. Rigid rules can do more harm than good.

4. Check In With Your Emotions Around Food

Ask yourself: Are you eating out of fear? Control? Guilt? Emotional insight is a critical piece of long-term nourishment and healing.

5. Get Expert Support When You Need It

You don’t need to figure this all out alone. If you’re dealing with chronic symptoms, food fear, or constant confusion, a qualified practitioner, such as myself, can help you build a realistic, empowering plan that fits your life.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Shoot For Perfection

Unless you have a serious medical condition or life-threatening allergy, your nutrition plan should support your life—not limit it. Let go of “clean” or “perfect” and move toward feeling nourished, energized, and emotionally balanced.

There’s a better way—and you deserve it.
